Intern Spotlight - Jacob Wells
Jul 17, 2023
Meet Jacob Wells! This summer Jacob is an agronomy operations intern located in Raymond, NE.
Where are you from?
I am from Saint Paul, NE.
Where do you go to school and what are you studying?
I go to school at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln and I am majoring in Agricultural Education and minoring in Agricultural Economics and Agronomy.
Why did you choose to be an intern with Farmers Cooperative?
I chose to be an intern with Farmers Cooperative so that I could get some good hands-on experience with a different type of agriculture. I grew up on my family's farm and I didn't really understand the retail side of agriculture. So, going to work for a coop has made me see that side of things better.
What are some of your day-to-day activities?
Some of my day-to-day activities are helping calibrate shuttles, load trucks and trailers, run chemicals and parts out to tender drivers and sprayers, and sometime driving tender trucks out to the sprayers.
What is one thing that you've learned so far this summer?
I have learned how much goes into getting that chemical out into the field and the supply chain. Just how hard it is to get that chemical to a sprayer and onto a field with how many different hands that it goes through. As well as how many moving parts there are in a cooperative.
What has been your favorite part of your internship thus far?
Talking with the producers has been my favorite part. Seeing their growing practices and how their crops are growing this year. I am not from this area so just seeing some of the different practices in this area has made me learn a lot and I have enjoyed it.
What is a fun fact about yourself?
I like to go golfing, but I'm not very good at it.
What would be your dream job, or what is a job you plan on pursuing post-graduation?
I guess wherever the road takes me. There are a couple of different paths that I can see myself going down. One of them is I'd like to be a high school ag teacher and could go on and get my masters to be a superintendent or a principal. I could see myself taking the extension route and doing some agronomy research. I could also see myself going into production agriculture.
