Farm Fuel Safety Tips

Oct 03, 2025

Fuel is vital on the farm, but safe handling is just as important. Taking a few simple steps can
prevent accidents, protect equipment, and keep your family safe.

Store Safely
  • Keep tanks in good condition and check regularly for leaks or rust.
  • Clearly label tanks and containers with the type of fuel.
  • Place tanks away from buildings, heat sources, and ignition risks.
  • Ensure tanks are properly vented and secured to prevent tipping or spills.
Handle with Care
  • Always use approved containers for transporting and storing fuel.
  • Do not overfill tanks or containers—leave room for fuel expansion.
  • Never smoke, weld, or use open flames while fueling or near tanks.
  • Ground equipment when fueling to prevent static sparks.
Protect Equipment
  • Shut off engines and allow hot equipment to cool before refueling.
  • Use funnels or automatic shut-off nozzles to minimize spills.
  • Check filters regularly to keep out dirt and water, which can damage engines.
  • Keep fueling areas clean and free of clutter.
Think Safety First
  • Wear gloves and safety glasses when handling fuel.
  • Wash hands and exposed skin after contact with fuel.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher rated for fuel fires nearby at all times.
  • Train family and workers on emergency procedures in case of fire or spills.
Remember: A few small steps help prevent accidents and protect your farm, equipment, and family.
