Harvest Preparation

Harvest is right around the corner, and before heading to the field, a pre-harvest inspection of your tires and wheels is a smart step.

Here's a helpful checklist to guide you:

Equipment to check:
  • Combine
  • Tractors
  • Grain carts
  • Trucks and trailers

What to look for:
  • Air Pressure - Check and set pressures to the manufacturer's recommended levels.
  • Tire/Wheel Damage - Inspect sidewalls for vertical cracks (inside and outside), stubble damage, or exposed cords. If cords are showing, cuts are visible, or snags are present, the tire should be replaced.
  • Rims & Bolts - Look for cracks around the bolt pattern or anywhere on the rim. Ensure bolts are tight and that no patterns are cracked, broken, or loose.
  • Dry Rot/Weather Checking - Watch for signs for aging or deterioration.
  • Truck Tire Age - Locate the serial number on the sidewall. Tires older than 10 years should be replaced, especially if traveling at highway speeds or hauling heavy loads.
  • Vibrations or Pulling - A pull to one side or excessive vibration often signals a tire or wheel issue.
  • Steel Cords - If visible on truck tires, replace immediately.
  • Tread Depth - Minimum tread requirements:
    • 4/32" on steer axle tires
    • 2/32" on drive and trailer tires
