How to Check Your Propane Tank Gauge Before Winter

Sep 17, 2025

As the weather begins to cool down in Nebraska and Kansas, now is the perfect time to make sure your propane tank is ready for the months ahead. A quick gauge check today can save you from unexpected run-outs and chilly nights once the first frost arrives.

Reading Your Propane Gauge
Most propane tanks are equipped with a round dial located under the lid on top of the tank. This gauge shows the percentage of propane remaining—not the number of gallons. For example:
  • 80% means your tank is full.
  • 30% means it’s time to schedule a delivery.
  • 20% or less means you should call right away to avoid running out.
It’s important to remember that propane tanks are never filled to 100% to allow room for expansion. A full tank will read around 80%.

Why Check Now?
Fall is a busy time in Nebraska and Kansas, from harvest season to the first cool nights. Propane demand begins to increase across the region. By checking your tank in September, you can schedule delivery before cold weather spikes usage and before winter storms make travel difficult.

Take the Worry Out of Winter with Our Programs
While checking your gauge is important, we also offer two programs designed to make life easier and stress-free:
  • Keep-Full Program
We’ll track your usage and automatically schedule deliveries when your tanks get to around 30%. You don’t have to lift the lid or watch the gauge—we do the work for you.
  • Tank Monitoring
With advanced monitors, we can see your tank level in real-time. This is especially helpful for farms, vacation homes, or anyone who wants peace of mind that their tank won’t run low. We also offer an app so you can have access to that at all times as well.
Stay Warm, Stay Safe
Don’t wait until your gauge reads empty to think about propane. Take a moment today to check your level, and call us to schedule a fill or enroll in one of our convenient programs. With a little preparation, you can head into winter confident that your home or farm will stay safe, warm, and comfortable all season long.
